ARTIST INFO

Hello I am Ashanti Norwood, I began to play violin back in 2010 when I was 7 years old! I am strongly influenced by my communityecbause of Youth Volume founded by Clara Hardie I truly understand the power of sound and try to perform music that speaks to everyone across the musical world. I am now 20 years old and in entering my 2nd year of teaching in hope to fill up my community with artist!

Ashanti signature style is instantly recognizable and is becoming a sound that others are beginning to emulate. I hope to have my name become increasingly heard on a national stage, and the kids I teach find themselves through the art of music.

Ashanti completed a teacher training called Growing Equitable Music Studios with Clara Hardie as well as Book 1 Suzuki Teacher training with David Strom. She was a paid Teacher's Assistant under Clara Hardie in Detroit Youth Volume group classes for three years prior to taking on their own private lesson students in Fall 2022. Ashanti was also a Junior Counselor with Girls Rock Detroit at age 17. She also co-facilitated a song-writing workshop series for DYV students alongside Detroit musician Joe Reilly. The workshops series resulted in the release of two original songs, recorded and produced by Ashanti. Aside from being a brilliant viola player, Ashanti also played violin for 12 years with Detroit Youth Volume, enjoying private lessons in the classical Suzuki method, group classes with local artists specializing in Detroit-centric genres like jazz, and teaching herself guitar. You can hear about A's experience with Detroit Youth Volume near the end of this video created by the University of Michigan. Ashanti frequents open mic nights whenever possible and is constantly putting out music as a singer song-writer.
